Q: What Does 'Krav Maga' Mean?

A: Hebrew Translation For Krav- “Combat” and Maga- “Contact”, meaning “Contact Combat”. Krav Maga is the official self-defense and fighting system of the Israeli Defense Forces. It has been recognized as the most efficient self-defense system for real-life situations, emphasizing practical defenses against real attacks. It has been taught to hundreds of U.S. law enforcement agencies and thousands of civilians. Krav Maga is a simple, effective self-defense system emphasizing instinctive movements, practical techniques and realistic training scenarios.

Q: Who Created Krav Maga?

A: Krav Maga was created and developed by Imi Sde-Or (Lichtenfeld), Israeli Grand-master (1910-1998) who started it in the late 1940’s when serving as Chief Instructor for hand to hand combat and combat fitness training for the Israeli Defense Forces. Imi, as a young man growing up in Bratislava, Slovakia, was a champion heavy weight boxer, a top-level wrestler, and an expert in judo/jujitsu.

Q: What Does The Krav Maga Symbol Mean?

A: It Is An Artistic Symbol Of The Hebrew Letter “Kouf” and “Mem” – “K” and “M”. The K and M are surrounded by an open circle because the system is open to improvement by adding techniques, exercises and training methods and eliminating techniques from the system when there is a new better approach.

Q: What Type Of Techniques Will I Learn At Xtreme Krav Maga St. Louis?

A: The system is based on simple tactics and instinctive movements, the reality-based system is designed to teach real self-defense in the shortest time possible. You’ll learn to punch, kick, knee, elbow, and head-butt, along with learning how to defend these same attacks you will defend against chokes, grabs, bear hugs and weapons (guns, knives, and bats) from all angles. The intensive training will teach you to function under stress, shock and adrenaline. Learning Krav Maga will help you be safe and more secure, along with getting a great workout.

Q: How Fit Do I Have To Be To Start In Krav Maga?

A: Krav Maga was designed for the Israeli Army which consisted of a mixed bunch: fit and unfit men, women and those reservists in their forties that sat behind a desk all day. The system had to be easy for both groups to learn and to maintain with minimal amount of practice. Everyone in the class learns at their own pace with no egos so if you are not in shape this will not matter.

A: The unique system of Krav Maga has been taught to: Israeli Special Forces, Law Enforcement, FBI, SWAT, U.S. Marshals, Illinois State Police, Highway Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard, Military, and Civilians and more.

Q: What If I Have Never Taken Martial Arts Classes Before?

A: For many people who train at Xtreme Krav Maga, Krav Maga is their only martial arts experience, however we also have many students who have years of experience in other systems, we welcome everyone to participate, regardless of background.

Q: How is Krav Maga Different From Other Martial Arts?

A: First off Krav Maga has no katas, no rituals, no non-sense. Based on simple principles and instinctive movements, this reality-based system is designed to teach real self-defense in the shortest possible time. You’ll learn to defend against chokes and grabs from all angles, punches and kicks, and weapons such as guns, knives, and bats.

Q: What Type of Belt System is Used?

A: Krav Maga does have a color belt system of advancement in expertise, but no physical belts are worn. Each belt level carries with it various techniques that must be performed in a testing environment. However, although students must successfully pass a belt test to reach the next class level, students are not required to belt test. A certificate of achievement is awarded for each level.

Q: Will I Lose Weight?

A: Yes. Losing weight is definitely a side-benefit of Krav Maga. Classes always include a warm-up and a workout.

Q: What Do I Wear to Class?

A: Krav Maga shirt, no shoes on mats and athletic shorts or athletic pants. We also have Krav Maga clothing available in our Pro Shop.

A: Xtreme Krav Maga St. Louis offers boxing, grappling, cardio kickboxing, sparring, kettle bell, and fitness & conditioning classes in addition to our self defense classes, offering you an all around workout!

A: Krav Maga, unlike other forms of martial arts, is a fast progressing system. Part of its design was driven by the need to train people quickly and efficiently. Fortunately, it typically takes a person of average physical ability little time before significant progress is achieved.

Q: Can my kids take Krav Maga?

A: Absolutely! The world can be an unsafe place for children, and providing them with some basic form of self-defense knowledge early on is important. Krav Maga is particularly well suited to children because it was designed with all segments of the general population in mind. It takes neither size, muscle mass nor body-builder type strength to excel at Krav Maga.
